School Milk Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador

The School Milk Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador Inc. is an independent, non-profit entity, which assists with the availability and affordability of milk for students. The Foundation operates a School Milk Program in over 250 schools in Newfoundland and Labrador, reaching approximately 95% of our provinces Kindergarten to Grade 12 population.

Unlike other School Milk Programs in Canada, we have our own branded School Milk packaging, which incorporates action graphics and our "Go with Milk!" slogan to promote milk as part of a healthy active lifestyle. School Milk is available in 250mL and 500mL cartons of white milk (1% and 2% MF), as well as chocolate milk (1% MF only). The price that the students pay for School Milk is set well below the normal retail price, and is clearly marked on the cartons.

In addition to subsidizing the price of School Milk and making the product more easily accessible, the School Milk Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador also offers promotions and healthy living presentations to schools. Our in-class presentations for Kindergarten to Grade 6 and our "Healthy Eating Active Living Toolkits" for Grades 7 to 12 were developed based on the Department of Education's curriculum guidelines, and are extremely well received by students and schools alike.

The School Milk Foundation is primarily industry driven. We receive funding and/or in-kind contributions from Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador, the two dairy processors in our province (Scotsburn Dairies and Central Dairies Limited), and the Agrifoods Division of the provincial Department of Natural Resources.

The School Milk Foundation has three full time office staff as well as an independent Board of Directors. Our Board Members consist of representatives from dairy producers, dairy processors, the Newfoundland and Labrador School Boards Association, as well as the provincial government (in the areas of agriculture, education and health).
