Federation of Agriculture Pleased with Provincial BudgetDate Published: April 21, 2008The Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture (NLFA) is pleased with the budget delivered by Finance Minister Tom Marshall on Tuesday.
In addition to existing programs, the budget promises to establish a $10 million Farm Loan Guarantee Program to provide farmers with enhanced access to capital; $1 million for research and development in livestock and crop sectors; an investment of $2.95 million for the cranberry industry; and $5.4 million to establish an Aleutian Disease Management Program for the fur industry.
“These are very significant investments in the growing agriculture industry,” said NLFA President Merv Wiseman. “This government obviously recognizes the potential of the industry and is willing to invest in it to see more of its potential come to fruition. This is a historical day for the province, and in particular the agriculture industry.”
The Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture is an organization which represents farmers and farmer groups in the province. Their motto is “Farmers Helping Farmers”, and they believe that by sharing information and speaking with a united voice, farmers can work more effectively for the betterment of the agriculture industry, and for the improvement of the province as a whole.
The agriculture industry provides approximately 6200 jobs in Newfoundland and Labrador and has primary and value-added production worth over $500 million.
