Former President
Mervin Wiseman
(Fur Breeders Assoc. of NL)
Mervin Wiseman studied Political Science at Memorial
University of Newfoundland (1972-76) and later completed
studies in Nautical Science at the same institution
(1977-78). He is the owner of the largest silver fox
farm in North America, located in North Harbour, Placentia
Bay.
Mervin is currently serving his forth term as president
of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture.
He is also president of the NL Livestock Council and
immediate past president of the NL Fur Breeders Association.
In addition, Mervin was elected, in September of 2007,
for a three year term as vice–chair of the Canadian
Agriculture Human Resource Council (CAHRC). His work
in all of these areas finds him on numerous provincial
and national committees in the interest of advancing
agriculture in NL and across Canada.
Mervin feels his interaction with the Regional Economic
Development Boards and the provincial Rural Secretariat
might be the most interesting and productive for advancing
the farming industry at this time. His role as this
province’s representative on the National Canadian
Income Stabilization (CAIS) committee is very critical
in achieving safety nets programs for farmers in this
province.
Mervin draws his inspiration from his wife Eileen,
who teaches in Clarenville and continues to tolerate
his travelling lifestyle – his daughter Merissa,
who works with a public legal education organization
for the province of NL, and his son Chan, who is chair
of the provincial young farmers’ organization
and chair of the provincial youth organization, Futures
in Newfoundland and Labrador Youth (Finaly).
When Mervin is not caught up in all his farming activities,
you will find him at the Canadian Coast Guard in St.
John’s, where he has worked as a full time Search
and Rescue Coordinator for the last 32 years.
