Newfoundland
and Labrador Fur Breeders Association
Fur farmers in Newfoundland and Labrador are represented by the
NL Fur Breeders Association. Most of the Association’s approximately
thirty members raise mink, with the remainder having fox operations.
The main goal of the organization is to create an environment which
will promote the economic well being of the industry. This is primarily
accomplished through advocacy.
The NL Fur Breeders Association Board of Directors is made up of
nine members who represent all the regions of the province.
Some major areas of advocacy for the organization include animal
codes of practice and best management practices for environment
and security. The marketing component of the Fur Breeders Association
is emphasized, as the organization works very closely with the auction
houses where the pelts are sold. Marketing and promotion are generally
done in collaboration with the auction houses.
The Fur Breeders Association has been working with government to
mitigate any problems or issues relating to environmental issues
and animal welfare. The Association also communicates with the industry
to keep its members informed of developments of interest to the
fur industry. The Fur Breeders Association facilitates access to
raw materials for feed as well.
